Introduction to Benefits 2018

This one-day introductory course has for many years been repeatedly well received by both participants and organisations alike. It aims to introduce the welfare benefits system with simplicity, particularly the distinctions between means-tested, non-means tested, contributory and universal benefits, but specifically in the contact of welfare reform.

The course has been designed to enable delegates to recognise and understand the purpose of the most commonly claimed benefits, focusing on jobseekers and incapacity for work, the discretionary assistance, housing benefit and Disability Living Allowance changes including the new Personal Independence Payment.

Course content:

simple method of clarity, around contributory, universal, means-tested and earnings replacement benefits, including benefit maximisation and Universal Credit
detailed look at Income Support, income based Jobseekers Allowance and income related Employment & Support Allowance, including an understanding of premiums and joint claims.
Housing Benefit (including Local Housing Allowance changes)
replacement of the Discretionary Social Fund
The end of working age Disability Living Allowance and the new Personal Independence Payment
Welfare reform and benefit changes 2012-18

Methods of delivery:

Delegates are supplied with a course companion containing comprehensive reference material for future use. The day is broken up by a series of exercises focussing on each of the areas covered, and the trainer employs visual aids and prompts to ensure the complexity of the subject is communicated in a user-friendly way

Learning outcomes:

To gain knowledge of how to claim the correct benefits, including maximisation
Delegates will form an understanding of the common qualifying rules and problems claiming different benefits
Delegates will be better equipped to advise and support clients as to how to make effective claims for the most popular benefits available
Understanding the proposed changes to housing benefit and their impact on claimants, including an overview of the current welfare reform programme
